WHY IS FIRST-AID IMPORTANT?

First-Aid provides limited care for an illness or injury, until more trained personel arrive, or the illness or injury is appropriately dealt with. First-Aid generally consists of series of simple techniques, that an individual is trained to perform with minimal equipment.

Learning First-Aid saves lives. First-Aiders are taught to treat as well as prevent injuries from getting worse, and First-Aiders promote a healthy recovery through proper treatment options.

The most important skills taught involve the “ABC”s which stands for Airway, Breathing, and Circulation. Some organizations add a fourth step of “D” for Deadly bleeding or Defibrillation, while others consider this as part of the Circulation step. Variations on techniques to evaluate and maintain the ABCs depend on the skill level of the First-Aider.

Once the ABCs are secured, First-Aiders can begin additional treatments, as required, some including the the “3B”s: Breathing, Bleeding, and Bones (or “4Bs”: Breathing, Bleeding, Brain, and Bones).
